Sangita is the term used in Sanskrit, as well as in the modern languages of India, for what we call "music".

The prefix san conveys the idea of union, of togetherness (the equivalent of the Greek syn), while gita means "song".
Literally sangita can be translated as "singing together", which sums up very well what the artists have sought to accomplish in this work: a "part-song", employing different means the actual voice of Sangeeta, that of Vincenzo Mingiardi's guitars and in one piece (Rain), that of Giulio Visibelli's flute.

The title is also intended as a well-deserved tribute to the extraordinary vocal performer on this CD, the khayal singer Sangeeta Bandyopadhyay, for "Sangita" is also a fairly common name in India.
In its feminine adjectival form, it can be translated more or less as "having the qualities of music", or "musical". As the Latins used to say, nomen omen, name is destiny!

In all three pieces, "Twilight", "Rain", and "Prayer", Sangeeta melodically explores the interplay of emotional, rhythmic, and aesthetic elements characteristic of transcendental music.
Through her unique and delicate expressiveness she unearths the mystical qualities of each raga and navigates the listener through the secret world of India.

Sangeeta's vocal virtuosity is accompanied by guitarist Vicenzo Mingiardi, who is also an expert on the Hindi language and literature.
He has collaborated as a translator, editor, and author of various texts, including a guide to North India.

The CD is accompanied by detailed liner notes which include a melodic presentation of the ragas as well as extraordinary black and white photographs by noted contemporary Italian photographer Francesco Radino.

Sainkho is an extraordinary vocalist from the Republic of Tuva.
Her unique vocal techniques range from crystalline soprano to vibrant baritone and include shamanic throat overtone singing.

She is a leading exponent of music and poetry within the former Soviet Union as well as in the West.
She has toured widely internationally, and regularly receives extensive print media, radio and television coverage.

Her music is featured in many films, and she herself is the subject of several, including the 2002 film "Sainkho" produced by the German broadcaster WDR.

On Naked Spirit you will hear the sounds of the taiga and the Siberian tundra, the call of a hundred night birds and the breathing of endless universes modeled by her voice, a voice that moves through space sculpting forms and dimensions.

Naked Spirit features an atmospheric ensemble including Djivan Gasparyan, renowned master of the duduk, and noted roman musical researcher/performer Walter Maioli.
It received the prestigious German Record Critics' Award for the Best World Music Album of 1998.

Chögyal Nomkhai Norbu Rimpoche is a master of Dzogchen, one of the great spiritual traditions of Tibet.
He was born in eastern Tibet, in Dege, in 1938, and is recognised as the incarnation of Adzam Drugpa, a great Dzogchen master of the last century.
He received the full education of a Tulku, or reincarnate Lama, before coming to the west at the invitation of Professor G. Tucci, who invited him to Rome to assist with his research at the Oriental Institute there.

Chögyal Namkhai Norbu Rimpoche later became professor of Tibetan and Mongolian studies at the Oriental Institute of the University of Naples. In response to many requests to give spiritual teachings, he has travelled all over the world, and has founded the "Dzogchen Community", an association of his students whose aim is to practice and preserve the Dzogchen teachings.

This digital recording was made in the intimate settings of his small personal retreat cabin which is hidden away among overhanging trees below a great rock precipice. On the cliff above the retreat cabin is located the "gompa", or practice hall of Meringar, the base of the "Dzogchen Community" in Tuscany, Italy.
It is a rare privilege to be able to participate in the practice of a great Tibetan spiritual master, and the intimate quality of this recording gives the listener the feeling of actually being present with him in his retreat.

On their voyage, the Fratelli Mancuso unveil vestiges left by men gone by, gently blowing on the layers of clay dust that hide them.
Not only do they depict the open-air theater of Sicily in all its imagery, customs and traditions, but also the Sicily that becomes a meeting place for a myriad of musical realities.

The project REQUIEM was born by the meeting of two musical worlds supposedly irreconcilable: the world of the Fratelli Mancuso - a couple of Sicilian artists already universally recognised for their work based reviving traditional Sicilian music reworked and reinvented in a new style thus blended- with the clear voices of the renown choral ensemble "Arminiosoincanto" specialised in Gregorian and early polyphonic repertoire. The Kontômè are idols that every household keeps in the same room as the altar. These icons represent the ancestral spirits, the guiding light of the family and society as a whole. These idols belong to the religious traditions of the Dagara tribe, an ethnic group native to Burkina Faso.

The Kontômè light our path throughout the course of our lives. We pray to them, we ask their advice and we thank them for what we are and what we have, now and in the future. In return, they help us as our destiny unfolds.

Therefore, through this small musical work, I thank my Kontômè and everyone else who, with infinite patience and determination, cooperated in the realization of this project.

THE ARTIST - Born in Burkina Faso in West Africa, Gabin Dabiré started his musical activity during his college years when he began playing the drums. In 1975 he arrived in Europe and spent some years experimenting with various types of music, dedicating his studies mainly to string and percussion instruments of Asian and tribal music.
In Milan, he founded the Centre for the Promotion and Cultural Diffusion Of African Arts: Music, Theatre, Dance, Literature and Cinema, and continues to play an important role in the diffusion of African culture.

Brizzi do Brasil is a unique project which sees contemporary Italian classical composer Aldo Brizzi bringing together and arranging the talent of a virtual whos-who of contemporary Brazilian music.

For the first time, the biggest names in Brazilian music, stars like Caetano Veloso and Madre Deus vocalist Teresa Salgueiro, Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, Virginia Rodriguez and Tom Zé, collaborate in an intriguing, modern fusion which skillfully blends Brazilian popular music with world, avant garde and electronica.

After selling over 150,000 copies abroad, here it is at last in Italy: the controversial "cult" record of the Mafia's music which traces the origins of the criminal tradition through a repertoire of lyrics from the past that express an old Mafia with a code of honour that no longer exists.

Mimmo Siclari is the scholar and musician who has sought out these old songs of the 'ndrangheta throughout Calabria and has been recording them since the Seventies.
This first volume of the trilogy, SONGS OF THE UNDERWORLD, produced by the Calabrian scholar and photographer, Francesco Sbano, is a collection of eighteen dramatic songs which relate stories of blood, honour and "omertà", showing the old code of the 'ndrangheta and the behaviour of the associates.

This disc is a very important historical document which encourages us to think about the roots of a phenomenon and the current situation in Calabria, as well as being a means of preserving our country's heritage of popular culture.
It also acts as a starting point for reflection upon the phenomenon of the Mafia and of the 'ndranghetta , because it is only by understanding the phenomenon, through to its most secret rites, that we can really free ourselves from it.

This CD groups a series of works dating from 1981 to 1994, whose common source of inspiration is Africa. More than a geographical expression, this means a “ mindscape”, a memory bank and psychic reservoir of archaic images, sounds and feelings. Somehow, in my mind these are collectively one of the wellsprings of sound and music.

Although from time to time Pygmy vocal styles are employed, this is in no way meant to suggest a literal imitation of “real” African music to which Memories of the Rain Forest is a sort of “personal"musical offering. To convey its full meaning, I recommend listening to the entire CD in one sitting, after which the listeners are invited to vary the order of the pieces , thereby composing their own mental African map and itinerary.
